| The AOF recognizes the outstanding merits of action stars with the first ever Dragon Award. This award will be presented to martial arts and other action stars who have re-defined the roles of action heros, stunt men and fight choreographers. First up is James Lew.
Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Brad Pitt, Steven Seagal, Jean Claude Van Damme,
Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise, The Rock, David Carradine, Chuck Norris, Dennis
Quaid, Kurt Russell, Madonna, Charlie Sheen, Sylvester Stallone, Brandon
Lee, Snoop Dog and the list goes on and on, have all kicked James Lew’s
butt! James began his career as a stuntman in the original “Kung
Fu” television series. From that time on he has been working nonstop.
He has earned the highest respect in the industry as a stuntman, stunt
coordinator, fight choreographer, second unit director and actor.
James was voted “Favorite Action Star” by fans of Inside Martial
Arts magazine. Internet fans voted him into the Hall of Fame for the Martial
Arts History Museum. Inside Kung Fu magazine inducted him as one of the
“Martial Arts Greats” alongside legends as Bruce Lee, Jackie
Chan, Chuck Norris, Steven Seagal and Jean Claude Van Damme.
Raised in South Central Los Angeles, his destiny was to answer a cattle
call in Hollywood for the hugely popular “Kung Fu” television
series. James went on to star in the now collectible Hong Kong film, “Young
Dragon”. He made the move to big budget studio films in 1984. John
Carpenter handpicked him as the Martial Arts Choreographer for 20th Century
Fox’s now cult film, “Big Trouble In Little China”.
Hit Parader magazine dubbed Lew “the king of big screen martial
arts villains”. From the deadly killer in “Red Sun Rising”
to the deadly fighter in the comedy spoof, “Hot Shots Part Deux”,
Lew has proven his chops in both drama and comedy. As a stunt and fight
coordinator his creative talents shined in the television series, “The
Crow”, “Entourage”, in the hit video game, “Matrix,
The Path of Neo”, the blockbuster remake “Get Smart”,
the upcoming video game, “GI Joe” and the just completed Ashton
Kutcher spy action, “Five Killers”.
Never one to stop challenging himself Lew has added screenwriter, producer
and director to his credits with his independent movie, “18 Fingers
of Death”. It is a mockumentary that follows Buford Lee, the most
famous unknown “B” minus low budget martial arts movie star
and Ronald Mack, a young black wanna be movie director from the hood.
Together they laugh, struggle and bond on their quest to make Buford’s
break out movie, “18 Fingers of Death”.
Next on the “to do list” for James Lew? One of the projects
being developed is a martial arts horror movie. He has also launched a
website, www.FightsCameraAction.com, providing a networking and showcase
for the action professional, aspiring action filmmakers and the worldwide
fans of action. “I want to create entertaining projects that inspire
and matter. It can be movies, television, commercials, video games, documentaries
or webisodes…I love it all.”
